3 PCs Build

Well I thought my builds were done (EliteDesk 800 G1, G2 and G3) but I had been given an eBay and Amazon gift card so I'm buying hard drives for 2 of them. Couldn't think of anything else I wanted on eBay/Amazon. The third one has exclusively a hard drive and the 2 with SSDs will be given 4 TB and 2 TB hard drives.

I bought the used DVD just for the green bracket and bezel. Only way to get them.

And the bluray works!

I will use the BooBoo Jam prize money to buy a new monitor.

Got this sealed on ebay. And a 2 TB coming soon. All I need to complete the builds is a second monitor, also still debating if I want to try an Arc A380 GPU instead of the builtin intel I'm using in one... but I'm still debating if I want to buy that.

The PC with Intel graphics (and I want to keep one with Intel) is running Windows with no SSD, so it's not ideal for gaming anyway so putting an A380 in it may be a waste. I was wanting to try Cyberpunk 2077 but it requires an SSD.

Just had an idea though. I don't know if Windows will activate if I reinstall it on an SSD, but I could unplug the HDD and try it and see if it works. If I had an SSD then the Arc A380 would be useful, I could play more games like Cyberpunk since the A380 is more powerful than any of my other GPUs.

Well I decided I would not buy a Arc A380 for one reason... if I did then my minimum spec system would be an NVIDIA 1030 and my code could get sloppy, or worse, I'll end up releasing something that's slow on integrated graphics.

But I got the one completing item I think...

Nifty little monitor that rotates portrait etc to use as a second monitor when I need something for debugging.

Ended up spending about $500 per system CAD. One was a bunch less than that, one was a bunch more than that and one was about $500. Monitors and peripherals extra.

This is about what I spent on everything. I have more RAM than I'll probably ever need though but it's better to have too much than not enough.

G1
--
Used system (with CPU, SSD, DVD) - $100
RX 6400 - $225
32 GB DDR3 - $50
4 TB HDD - $115

G2
--
Refurb system (with CPU, HDD, DVD, Windows 10 Pro) - $120
64 GB DDR4 - $150

G3
--
Barebones system - $60
Bluray - $225
GT 1030 - $110
64 GB DDR4 - $150
2 TB HDD - $80
256 GB SSD - $30
CPU - $100

Plus I bought some HP blue screws ($20), an HDD mounting bracket ($10) and some thermal paste ($15). The GT 1030 was supposed to go into the G2 but I can't get audio though builtin graphics on the G3 without the GT 1030... so they are way more lopsided than they would be.

Well terrible news, I got the last remaining piece, the 2 TB hard drive and went to plug it in, to see the bluray power connector broken off inside the cable... so no bluray drive anymore, I still have the dvd that'll fit but for fuck's sake I swear to fuck I hate God, he has never done a single thing for me.

Now I need to see if I can get the proper SATA power cable connector for this motherboard... so I can't even enjoy my new setup... I'm so fucking mad.

Since my PC has a power connector with a broken end in it attached to the motherboard, I had to order a new one before I boot it again.

A electronics repair shop just opened a block from me so I might take the bluray to them in July and see if they can put a new connector on it.

I'd call it either a manufacturing defect or something because with all my strength I couldn't get it off for about 3 minutes and must've broken it. It's just a little tiny SATA power, much smaller than an HDD/SSD SATA power specifically for a slim optical drive that broke.

I took my bluray to one repair shop and called another but they don't do it. I can't get to any others. So I'll have to put the DVD in it when I get the SATA power.

Actually might swap the bluray out of my laptop to use with it.

I did get my second monitor today though. Seems to work so far. I checked it for dead pixels with this BooBoo program:

number c
= c 0
number old
= old 0

function draw
{
clear c c c
}

function run
{
number k
key_get k KEY_RETURN
if (&& (== k 1) (== old 0)) change
if (== c 0) white black
= c 255
:white
= c 0
:black
:change
= old k
}

It toggles between black/white screen with the return key.

I've never used a second monitor before but at this angle I like it, so I'm getting a power strip that is bigger because right now there's nowhere to plug the monitor in. I was going to use an extension cord and only use it when I need it but I really like this angle for having a game on or something.

I started paying back my loan because my Mom loaned me $600 to buy some of this stuff.

I took the bluray out of my laptop and put it in my Windows G2. That way the parts are more evenly distributed. I installed a copy of Win DVD 11 Pro I purchased years ago and it still works to play bluray!

I put a DVD back in the laptop and now all I have left is to wait for that SATA power cable so I can get the G3 running again.

The primary monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse all travel to whichever computer I'm using via HDMI/USB switches. The beauty of these machines is they all have builtin speakers, so I can keep a bluray playing on the Windows machine while using Linux on the primary screen and the bluray audio plays through the builtin speaker.

Well I got the cable and the G3 is running. Everything is finished. I got dvd/bluray rippers to put my movies on my NAS and I ordered a headset for playing online games. My NAS backup drive filled up, luckily I had enough in giftcards to get everything I needed including a new 2 TB backup drive.

Since win10 is expiring I was able to borrow $300 more from my mom to get another EliteDesk 800 SFF (G6) that supports windows 11. Only because it was half price and my mom is a sucker for a sale. I've been paying back the money I borrowed from her every month...

It's a full refurb system doesn't need anything. I might put more mem in it one day (it's silly expensive and hard to max these ones out though.)

I got a bluray drive I use so I need to put it out of the G2 and into the G6, only I can't put it into the G6 because I can't find a bezel, so instead I'm getting a enclosure for the bluray drive. And putting a dvd into the empty slot.

The Most HP EliteDesk 800 SFF in one image:

I'm a little disappointed, the BIOS setup is locked, likely used in a corporate environment where they were all locked, and these ones are very secure, removing the battery/etc doesn't work. But I don't plan on messing with this thing too much, and plan to keep the original Windows 11 Pro install so it won't be a big issue.
